Turning Nitronic 50

A customer called to get roughing insert information for turning Nitonic 50 material. For roughing I would use a good positive rake breaker but not too high shear. The higher the shear the weaker the edge and he needs to rough out stock.
I have 2 options from both Mitsubishi & Kyocera for the standad CNMG 432. I still feel using the MS-US735 or the PS-CA6525 are the best options.
The CVD coating can take more heat in the roughing stage.
You can run these and get exceptional tool life at 100-120 SFM at .006-.008 per rev. I have run this as high at 175 SFM but it all depends if you have a few parts or a lot to determine if tool life is an issue.
They Kyocera may be a little stronger for this application because they have a ceramic compound added to the Titanium coating base that offers more lubricity and can take more heat compared to conventional CVD coatings.

Turning Titanium 6AL4V

A customer contacted us today looking for tools to turn his Titanium 6AL4V. He mentioned he has several jobs comming up. Turning Titanium is not that bad they key is to have a razor sharp edge. We can do most of the work with high polished uncoated carbide in a good micrograin C3 area.
Using CNGP / WNGP style inserts I would rough between 150-200 SFM around .008 per rev. You can also use a PCD diamond tipped insert and that would run about 400 SFM in Titanium. It all depends on how many parts you have to do and if time is an issue. one or two parts to make will not be on time or tool life.

There are some ALTiN-TiALN coated inserts out there, while they can take more heat normally you find Titanium coatings do not like to cut Titanium material. Stay uncoated or use a coating that is not Titanium based. I have one and will share this info in a future blog.

Mitsubishi Tech Help

Tool Systems is here to help.
I received a call Saturday morning (yes we work Saturday mornings just like most machine shops) for tech help on some Mitsubishi Carbide Products. Even though the customer has vending machines from another distributor they call Tool Systems on a regular basis for tech help. The main reason the customer mentioned is that "Tool Systems has the most technical product knowledge of Mitsubishi Carbide Products". The vending machine people just fill the machine and don't have product knowledge. I was happy to assist with the technical information so they could make parts over the weekend.

We have been selling and servicing Mitsubishi Carbide Products for over 21 years and have that many years worth of personal experience running the product, data and technical information.

A little history:
Tool Systems was the first distributor for Mitsubishi Carbide in this area, we started in 1989, that's 21 years ago. We are the longest and most technical Mitsubishi Carbide contact available. If there are any technical applications or questions you have on Mitsubishi products, please contact Tony at any time.

We did the leg work for small radii inserts

Tool Systems solves small radius insert issue.
A customer conctacted us in trouble, he was buying a Kennametal boring insert that was not going to be available anymore. He required a main finish boring insert with .004 radii for general materials but mostly for Titanium & High Nickel Alloys. He also requested the same insert with .002 radii. He had the carbide bars so wanted to fill the pockets for tooling he already had.
We found the .004 radii no problem, Plenty of stock TiALN coated.
We dug deeper and was able to get the .002 radii insert off the shelf with 2 choices for the customer. A flat top or with a full length molded chip breaker.

Tool Systems does the leg work for you, give us your application and we will find what you want.

We also have the ability to manufacture the tool for you if it's not a standard off-the-shelf. If the customer so desired we could even have our carbide center make the insert up from scratch with a zero (0) radii.

Mitsubishi New Ball Introduction

I know It's April 19th however we just found out today from our rep the Mitsubishi started a sale (on March 1, 2010) to introduce the new SRM2 indexable ball nose roughing mill. This cutter uses 2 inserts a center insert and an external insert to complete the ball. This replaces the original TBE style that we have been selling for the last 20 years that they have phased out. This new ball mill is a great product and really roughes out very well. It comes in the new TiALN coated VP15TF grade. The inserts have molded lock blocks in the back to keep them in the pocket. It really is a nice strong update to rough ball milling.

The standard cutter will just give you the ball radius like normal. They do have a "long" series in case you need to rough out with the side of the mill, perfect for slotting. The side milling pockets use the standard APMT series milling inserts you would find in standard square end mill designs.

Please contact us if you are in the market for an indexable roughing ball mill cutter system for new applications or to upgrade and replace older tooling you may have now. They (as we just found out today) are running a special promotion in kit form. When you buy 1 cutter and 20 inserts you save 30% off the MSRP. Per Mitsubishi All sales are final, with no returns and no blanket orders. Sale ends May 31, 2010.

45 degree Face Mill

Customer was using the traditional 3" SECO R220.13 face mill.
He was looking for something better to do 316SS.

After reviewing several SEAN insert options that would fit the pocket we found that there was a new cutter style available that used a very free cutting square insert. It's twice as thick and double sided.
We upgraded the customer to the new RMT milling cutter from Korloy.
Now he has 8 cutting edges with edge prep options to dial in the applications.
Here is what the new insert looks like:

Tapping 50Rc

Customer called in looking for a couple super strong taps. He requested a cobalt and carbide tap, trying to tap 50Rc steel. We do have some powdered metal mold taps off the shelf that can do 45-48Rc. Carbide taps are mostly for cast iron.
We quoted those taps as requested but asked if he could threadmill. He said yes and we guided him to HARDCUT threadmills that can thread parts up to 62Rc. Problem solved and by threadmilling he will get a better quality thread than tapping.

Manchester Insert Grades

Along with the upgrade on Manchester cut-off insert here is break down of your cut-off grades.

M45 #1 choice for general machine shop work. TiCN (silver) coated for ALL materials. Use instead of TiN (gold) runs the same as traditional TiN just with longer life because it has a little more lubricity.
Keep the old traditional TiN coated M40 as a back up if the M45 is out of stock.

M43 TiALN (black) coated for Alloy and Tool Steels, Stainless Steels, Nickel Alloys or if your machine is running oil in any material. TiALN needs heat to work, so any application that has heat this is your best choice for tool life.

Tool Systems in Cleveland Ohio has been an authorized Manchester Carbide distributor since 1993. Tool Systems has also received awards from Manchester for being one of the Top 10 Distributors in the USA 10 years in a row!
Here is a basic update:
If you are using the Classic Separator insert series

This was the main cut-off insert for Manchester and it did a fine job, however there is an update we know will work better for you.
The newer series is called S2.

The S2 is newer technology, it has a free flow scoop design that really helps when cutting gummy materials from 1018, 12L14 to 316 Stainless. It draws about 20% less pressure with better chip control. This combined with a radius on the edge that will increase tool life.

Classic Separator      Description      New S2 Separator
507-140                   3/32 neutral            507-275
507-143                   3/32 RH 5 deg         507-276

Special Plunge Mill

Here is a special tool we made for a customer. They had a part and had to plunge straight down. They had a wall to clear and needed to produce a tab. We designed and made this plunge grooving mill for them. We fed straight down on the part and it left a post sticking up (with the dimensions they required in diameter and height) and it produced a specific groove width. like a modified Trepan / Facegroove tool.

Carbide Burrs

Big Burr issues.
Machining Aluminum with a burr, material welding and sticking to the cutter.

A customer using a large 1" diameter Carbide Burr for Aluminum. We adjusted the grind using a double cut design with razor sharp edges (and a couple other adjustments) and applied our exclusive XTEND coating on the burr. It runs super smooth and free, now the material doesn't stick to the cutting edge or fill the flutes up with material. We turned this into a super burr and customer now runs 6 a month tool life cycle on them before they get dull.
We also provide complete reconditioning on them, sharpen and re-coat bringing them back to new condition. Another tooling solution from Tool Systems inc in Cleveland Ohio.

MP turning inserts

Mitsubishi Carbide has a new general purpose insert upgrade available.
The new "MP" chip breaker draws less pressure in the cut reducing heat and extending tool life.
This new style insert is an upgrade from older MA, QM, PM, M3, MF3, MF5, PS style inserts with even better chip control.
Use this turning upgrade in all steels and irons.
One great thing we see on this insert is while it shows a free flow like older CNMP style breakers, it has a stronger reinforced edge prep so it won't chip out.
We have been selling & servicing Mitsubishi Carbide products since 1989 and like this new upgrade.
